Latina/o Heritage Month Celebrates Culture Through Music, Film and Dialogue

What: At Community College of Philadelphia, diversity is more than a goal, it’s a shared mindset. The College celebrates Latina/o Heritage Month with a schedule of wide-ranging events designed to educate, entertain and evoke discussion.

Immigration Presentation: 10:30-11:30 a.m., Oct. 12, The Coffeehouse, located in the Winnet Student Life Building, 17th Street between Spring Garden and Callowhill streets. A discussion of history and experiences of Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cubans and Mexicans who has migrated to the United States from the 1900s to the present.

Latin Music Celebration: 4:30-6:30 p.m., Oct. 13, Pavilion Courtyard, located on 17th Street between Spring Garden and Callowhill streets. Live performances: Grupo Guego, Artístas y Músicos Latino Americanos (AMLA) and Raíces Culturales Latinoamericanas.

2 O.G. Documentary Film Screening and Discussion with the Director: 5-8 p.m., Oct. 14, Bonnell Auditorium, located on 17th Street between Spring Garden and Callowhill streets. Directed and produced by College employee Gilberto Gonzalez, this documentary explores the intergenerational gang that originated in the Spring Garden section of Philadelphia, which was one of the largest and oldest barrio for the Puerto Rican and Latina/o community in the state of Pennsylvania. Fireside Chat with Dr. Donald Guy Generals, president of Community College of Philadelphia, 3 p.m., Oct. 18, The Coffeehouse. Participants are encouraged to share reflections on a favorite book, poem or any other artistic impression that recognizes Latina/o heritage and culture
