Filling the Pipeline of Scientists

Dr. WootenDr. Tammy Wooten, department chair of Chemistry, is  encouraged by the changes that the College is making to help students meet the current demands for STEM careers. “The College has prioritized the improvement of our science labs and teaching spaces, and this has made a huge difference for our programs.”

The renovation project for the Chemistry department included replacement of deteriorated infrastructure, increased storage capacity, and enhancements in safety and instructional technology.

Dr. Wooten feels very optimistic about the impact of the Chemistry degree program, which started in the fall of 2016. “Our department is committed to making sure that when students leave the College they will be equipped to excel, compete and become scientists.”

Even with her many titles, Dr. Wooten feels that the classroom is where she makes a real difference by connecting with students and playing a role in preparing them for their futures. “Watching students transfer and begin their careers is extremely rewarding,” she said. “This past May, Maurice Benson became our first Chemistry program graduate, and we are so very proud of him.”

Benson entered the College in the fall of 2016 and graduated with high honors within a two-year period. This summer, he is volunteering in an organic synthesis research lab at Drexel University, and he plans to continue his education in pursuit of a master’s degree in Chemistry.
