2018 President's Report

President's 2017-2018 Report

Letter from the President

Philadelphia is in the midst of a social and economic renaissance. Helping to fuel that growth is Community College of Philadelphia. Whether paving the way for city residents to achieve the highest levels of academic success, or providing opportunities for those who have yet to enjoy the fruits of the city's prosperity, the College is in the forefront of transforming lives and communities.

This past year, Mayor Jim Kenney announced the launch of "Fueling Philadelphia's Talent Engine: A Citywide Workforce Strategy." The mayor's initiative is the most comprehensive effort to educate and train city residents in more than 50 years. If successful, it will create a unified system that aligns education and job training initiatives with the needs of employers so more people can secure jobs and careers that give them a chance at a successful life.

In partnership with the city and business community, we stand ready to create customized and clear paths that guide our students from where they are to where they want to be.

It is our goal to increase the number of graduates to compete for the jobs of the future and take part in the city's renaissance. By 2020, an estimated 35 percent of job openings will require at least a bachelor's degree, and 63 percent will require some college or an associate degree.

The College continues to lead as a Guided Pathways institution and provides free tuition through our 50th Anniversary Promise Scholarship program. Since our involvement, three-year cohort graduation rates have increased from 12 percent in 2016 to 16 percent in 2018. Additionally, fall-to-fall retention rates for full-time, first-time students have increased from 55.3 percent (2015–2016) to 58.5 percent (2016–2017).

From Rhodes scholar Hazim Hardeman to local businessman and entrepreneur Jonathan Williams, the impact of Community College of Philadelphia is profound. Our graduates have demonstrated what the opportunity afforded by the College can do for the future of Philadelphia, and its families and communities.

This annual report provides a glimpse into the lives of our community. I am hoping that you will be inspired and continue to support Community College of Philadelphia.
