Philadelphia, PA.– Community College of Philadelphia (CCP) will offer a week-long “Girls in STEM” camp during the week of August 12th to empower young females to pursue their interests in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) studies.

The “Girls in STEM” camp, which is exclusive to girls, is one of the two Transportation Summer Camp sessions geared towards sixth to eighth graders. During the week of August 19th, CCP will hold a second session, "Co-Ed – Boys and Girls in STEM,” which will focus on the future of young people in STEM transportation fields.

“Girls in STEM” will focus on promoting the future of young women in STEM transportation fields and highlighting women in other traditional male-dominated roles. During the week, the girls will engage in educational activities and take field trips including a visit to an auto shop run by women. Also included are live demonstrations and a visit from a female master welder known called “The Iron Lady.”

“At Community College of Philadelphia, we pride ourselves on playing a significant role in diversifying the local STEM workforce and providing a strong talent pipeline,” Community College of Philadelphia President Donald Guy Generals said. “The launch of our Transportation Summer Camp sessions and our recent $7.2-million investment in our biology, chemistry and microbiology labs reinforces our college’s commitment in expanding access to STEM resources and opportunities across Philadelphia.”

Throughout the week, “Girls in STEM” attendees will learn about cars, transportation, fossil fuels and greenhouse gases, gear ratios, electric motors and more. They will have the opportunity to build their own model cars and participate in field trips to the Simeone Automotive museum, SEPTA bus garage, Girls Auto Clinic and the Carvana Vehicle processing facility.

The cost of attending each of the week-long summer camps is $50 per student, which includes all field trips and daily lunches. The camps will take place from 9 am to 3 pm at CCP’s West Regional Center ‘s Auto Tech Center on 4731 Ludlow Street in Philadelphia, Pa. People of the College

SHAWANA
I went to CCP for a while, then I stopped. I was laid off from my job last September. One of my goals was to just focus on school. So when I was laid off, I took the opportunity to come back. Because of CCP’s policies, a lot of my classes transferred and I was able to come back and only take about three to four classes. My plan after graduation is to begin at La Salle while working part time. My education is so important. I let my work get in the way previously; now I’m taking my education seriously!
KAVON
I’m currently at Temple University studying Theater and Business Administration. In my high school, I was encouraged to think outside of the box and think about time management. My counselor from my high school recommended we go to CCP first because the College adds a lot of value and character for students. I ended up enrolling in CCP with a full ride!
PALUMA
I come from Puerto Rico, so the easiest way to transfer my credits and not have a big student loan was to come here to CCP. I was looking around at other colleges and CCP seemed like a really good fit for what I was looking for—and I heard good things. I’m glad I did.
SYMEON
My major here at the College is Business Administration. All of the ‘fun’ activities I thought were just for ‘fun’ as a kid were actually business-related so I decided that would be the best career to get into.
