Located in the College’s brand-new Library and Learning Commons, this will be Saxbys’ first Experiential Learning Platform at a community college

PHILADELPHIA – Community College of Philadelphia and Saxbys have announced in spring 2022, they will launch an Experiential Learning cafe inside the College’s brand-new Library and Learning Commons. The partnership is part of The Saxbys Experiential Learning Platform (E.L.P.), which are cafes designed for and run by students. With 13 E.L.P.s across 10 colleges and universities, this will be the first student-run cafe at a community college, creating a new pathway for students from all backgrounds at CCP to develop entrepreneurial skills and to embolden their communities.

A signing agreement ceremony took place today where College and Saxbys leaders discussed the importance of providing community college students with tangible work experiences, transferable skills, and the opportunity to make an impactful difference in their community. Attendees also participated in a tour of the new cafe under construction, set to officially open in spring 2022.

“Community College of Philadelphia is thrilled to be partnering with Saxbys to bring this meaningful opportunity to our students,” said Dr. Donald Guy Generals, College president. “As the first community college to offer this experience, we look forward to watching our students grow and, ultimately, thrive, as they navigate the realities of operating a business. We are also especially excited that the brand new café will be housed in our newly revamped Library and Learning Commons, designed to revolutionize the way students learn and collaborate.”

Established in 2015, The Saxbys Experiential Learning Platform supports students by providing them with in-depth entrepreneurial opportunities to enrich traditional classroom learning. Each cafe is run by a Student Cafe Executive Officer (SCEO) who earns invaluable leadership experience in addition to full academic credit and competitive wages. The SCEO runs and manages all aspects of the cafe including team development, community outreach initiatives, and the cafe's profit and loss statements.

“Since its creation in 1965, Community College of Philadelphia has become the largest public institution of higher education in Philadelphia, providing immense opportunities to a dynamic, diverse and talented student population,” said Saxbys Founder and CEO Nick Bayer. “It's a tremendous honor to partner with CCP to bring our first Experiential Learning partnership to a community college and add to its long tradition of accessibility and academic excellence.”

Both the College and Saxbys are committed to empowering students to take charge of their futures through the development of social, managerial, and leadership skills necessary to succeed in modern business environments. Applications are available now for the Student Cafe Executive Officer position at the College. As the inaugural Student CEO, they will gain invaluable experience operating a cafe, developing a team, becoming a community leader, and an expert in business fundamentals. Click here to learn more.
