PBS Science Guru Grand Hank Teams up with Community College of Philadelphia to Inspire High School Students at Career Day

What: Grand Hank, PBS TV personality and science guru, will discuss how education has played a critical role in his development as both a scientist and an entrepreneur at Big Bang STEM Career Day at Community College of Philadelphia. High school students from throughout Philadelphia are invited to explore the many career opportunities in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math. Workshops include: The Chemistry of Chocolate, Exploring Advanced Medical Technology, Experience Engineering, and Separation Techniques in the Biological Sciences. College alumni will be on hand to discuss their academic research projects and show teens what they can achieve as STEM students. Participants can also interact with College science students between sessions and learn how they can get started on their path to college. Lunch will be provided.

When: Monday, April 20, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. High school students are encouraged to RSVP for Big Bang STEM Career Day at http://www.ccp.edu/STEM-RSVP. High school teachers may also register their students.

Why: Big Bang STEM Career Day was conceived and developed by Dr. Linda Powell, chair of Community College of Philadelphia’s Biology Department. Powell has nurtured and supported legions of students who are now standouts in the STEM fields. In 2014, Powell helped launch Raising Interest in Science Education to mentor and nurture minority students at the College who are underrepresented in the sciences.

Where: Winnet Building, Great Hall, Room S2-19, 17th Street between Spring Garden and Callowhill streets.
