MaST Community Charter School Seniors Start their Final Year of College Classes at Community College of Philadelphia

WHAT: When six students from the 2018 senior class at MaST Community Charter School (MaST) step off the bus and on to the site of Community College of Philadelphia’s Northeast Regional Center on Sept. 6, it will be a bittersweet memory. Not only is it the last first day of their high school years, it is also the start of their last year at Community College of Philadelphia.

The MaST students are the first class to be graduating under a special dual enrollment program created through a partnership with Community College of Philadelphia two years ago, also known as MC2. As sophomores, MaST high school students entered the dual enrollment program, taking a combination of college level courses, along with their own high school courses. The students are on track to graduate in May, earning 60 college credits and an Associate in Arts Degree in Business.

The Community College Research Center at Columbia University conducted studies in Florida, New York City and California and found that dual enrollment participation is positively related to a range of college outcomes, including college enrollment and persistence, greater credit accumulation and higher college GPA.

Programs such as these provide an accelerated career track for Philadelphia’s motivated and talented high school students. As more local students begin taking college classes during their high school years, Philadelphia can develop a more knowledgeable workforce.
