Classes in the ESL Institute offer adult, non-native speakers of English the opportunity to improve their basic English language skills in order to actively increase their participation in the larger society, continue their education into academic programs or to prepare for citizenship.
Adults at least 18 years of age are eligible for the program.
Before enrolling for classes, prospective students must take the ESL Institute Placement Test.
The ESL Institute provides four levels of ESL instruction:
- ESL 1 (Beginner)
- ESL 2 (Intermediate)
- ESL 3 (High Intermediate)
- American Idioms (Advanced)
These levels follow the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems (CASAS) competencies model, which integrates the four language acquisition skills – listening, speaking, reading and writing.
There is a fee for each course due at the time of registration.
- COURSE FEE: $80 for each course (American Idioms: $100)
- CLASSES: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 9:00 am - 11:30 am OR Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm.
- REGISTRATION: Returning students: You cannot register until you complete your last day of class. Registration for Spring 2020 courses will begin on Wednesday December 4, 2019 through Friday December 10, 2020. Winnett Building, Rm S3-03, Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:00 pm.
- REGISTRATION: New students: Before you can register for classes you must be tested for placement in ESL. You will be assigned a registration date and time after placement testing. To inquire about placement testing, call 215-751-8531 or visit the DACE Office, Winnet Building, Rm S3-03, between the hours of 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. - PAYMENT: Due at the time of registration and can be made by cash, money order, credit or debit card. Cash payment is only accepted at the Cashier’s Office on the Main Campus. Check and money order payments should be made payable to Community College of Philadelphia. Classes may be canceled due to low enrollment. Refunds will be granted only if the class is canceled or the student withdraws before the first class meeting. To withdraw, you must visit the DACE Office in Winnet, S3-03.
